Rail for London Transport Minister Glenda Jackson announced plans to give future mayors of London stronger powers over rail services in London. She said the Government would be placing a duty on the Franchise Director to consult the mayor on the level of services in the capital. She said ministers would amend the Bill setting up the Greater London Authority in the Lords to give the mayor the power to issue instructions as well as guidance to the Franchising Director. The mayor would be given the power to promote new network improvements."We believe this package of amendments will more fully define the relationship between the mayor and the Franchise Director director and give each of them a clear framework of cooperation within which to work," she said. "The Franchise Director and the Strategic Rail Authority will retain the final say over rail, but the mayor will have a crucial role to play in improving London's rail services."

Railfuture is an independent, voluntary group representing rail users in Britain with 20,000 affiliated and individual members. It is not funded by train companies, political parties or trade unions, and all members have an equal say.
Railfuture campaigns for cheap and convenient rail services for everyone; better links for buses, bikes and pedestrians; policies to get more heavy lorries on to rail; new lines, stations and freight terminals. In short, a better rail service and a bigger rail system for both passengers and freight.
Railfuture is pro-rail but not anti-road or anti-air. However, we campaign for a switch from road and air to rail. We do not interfere in the running of the railway - we campaign for the quality and range of services provided, not how they are delivered. We are the only champion of all rail users.
