Ilkeston The Nottinghamshire Local Transport Plan bid includes a station on the Erewash Valley line close to the former Ilkeston Junction and Cossall station.

Information age A common feature at many rail stations is the lack of information about bus operators, we discovered when we surveyed 21 local stations between January and April. This is especially silly on the Matlock line on which bus tickets are valid on the train and vice versa. Very few stations possess a street map. We have sent our findings to train operators and local authorities.

Long Eaton The branch is apppealing to Central Trains and local authorities to improve the public information at Long Eaton. Nottingham-bound passengers are regularly boarding the new Midland Mainline Turbostars to London by mistake. The booking office (not always open) announces late running by loud speaker but normally the speakers are silent. There are no visual display units and signs say only Trains to Nottingham and Trains to Derby. Passengers are therefore dependent on the destination display on the front of the train which is unsatisfactory.

Centre of Excellence Deputy prime minister John Prescott has invited Nottingham to become a Centre of Excellence for integrated transport with a strategy similar to Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire. Centre of Excellence status brings no extra money so the title would provide little benefit except as an example to less enlightened authorities. We will encourage the process, but the lack of early morning and late night trains does not add up to excellence.

Railfuture is an independent, voluntary group representing rail users in Britain with 20,000 affiliated and individual members. It is not funded by train companies, political parties or trade unions, and all members have an equal say.

Railfuture campaigns for cheap and convenient rail services for everyone; better links for buses, bikes and pedestrians; policies to get more heavy lorries on to rail; new lines, stations and freight terminals. In short, a better rail service and a bigger rail system for both passengers and freight.

Railfuture is pro-rail but not anti-road or anti-air. However, we campaign for a switch from road and air to rail. We do not interfere in the running of the railway - we campaign for the quality and range of services provided, not how they are delivered. We are the only champion of all rail users.
