SubscribeDrive for reliability Chiltern Railways reduced the level of services north of Princes Risborough and strengthened some trains in an effort to improve reliability. £600,000 has been spent at Risborough on a new platform and foot bridge to increase capacity. The new Chiltern trains have been received well by passengers. Chiltern's managing director Adrian Shooter was guest speaker at the branch's annual meeting on 6 March.
Banbury boom Estate agents in Banbury have reported a boom in sales and house price increases following the improvements to rail services provided by Chiltern Railways which has made the town more attractive for London commuting. Banbury station will not now be demolished but upgraded with lifts, new ticket offices, travel centre, cafe and waiting area. Waiting lounges are to be introduced on the platforms and extra car parking is planned.
Decongestant Oxford-Bicester came into its own in November when severe road congestion saw the early morning train take over 100 people. When the East-West Link gets the go-ahead, the journey time will be cut from 26 minutes to 15 which will make the service a real congestion beater. Proposals to expand Bicester shopping village and upgrade Bicester Town station were discussed by Cherwell Council on 3 December. The Oxford-Bicester service, which was introduced in June, is "performing above predictions and within budget". It is hoped the service will be extended to Milton Keynes for the Millennium.
Euro freight Central Railway has begun consulting local councils over its revamped plans for freight services through the Channel Tunnel to Europe.
Positive approach Wycombe Council has approved a development plan for High Wycombe station and has given support for a park-and-ride station at Saunderton. The council also wants a bus link between Maidenhead, High Wycombe and Amersham stations. Its local plan which will remain in force until 2011 aims to protect the trackbed of the former rail line between Wycombe and Bourne End.

Railfuture is an independent, voluntary group representing rail users in Britain with 20,000 affiliated and individual members. It is not funded by train companies, political parties or trade unions, and all members have an equal say.
Railfuture campaigns for cheap and convenient rail services for everyone; better links for buses, bikes and pedestrians; policies to get more heavy lorries on to rail; new lines, stations and freight terminals. In short, a better rail service and a bigger rail system for both passengers and freight.
Railfuture is pro-rail but not anti-road or anti-air. However, we campaign for a switch from road and air to rail. We do not interfere in the running of the railway - we campaign for the quality and range of services provided, not how they are delivered. We are the only champion of all rail users.
