Railwatch 074 - December 1997

100 years of service

One of the most spectacular rail lines in Britain celebrated its centenary this year. To celebrate the route from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh, a special map was produced by Glasgow artist David Gray.

The full colour map picks out many of the features of the line in a humorous way. The map, and another produced for the Fort William- Mallaig line, are available for £1.20 each (post free) from Glenfinnan Station Museum, near Fort William PH37 4LT (Tel: 01397 722295 or 722363). Please make cheques payable to Glenfinnan Station Museum Trust.

Curator John Barnes said: "We have other goods for which we would welcome orders to help us through the winter months."

David McConnell's new book of the Dingwall and Skye Railway is £25. Video 125 of the Skye Train - A Driver's Eye View is £19.95. There are also Kyle Line centenary pens at £1.50 each, West Highland Line pens at £1.50 and the book Welcome Aboard the Jacobite Steam Train at £12.99.

The Friends of the Line organised steam specials in October, sponsored by whisky distillers Whyte & Mackay. Tom Campbell of the Friends said the trips had gone well.

The Friends are just one of the many rail support groups now listed in the Directory of Rail User groups, published by the Rail Regulator.

Rail users are encouraged to join Railfuture to help us campaign for a bigger and better railway - membership for individuals is just £20 per year

Railfuture is an independent, voluntary group representing rail users in Britain with 20,000 affiliated and individual members. It is not funded by train companies, political parties or trade unions, and all members have an equal say.

Railfuture campaigns for cheap and convenient rail services for everyone; better links for buses, bikes and pedestrians; policies to get more heavy lorries on to rail; new lines, stations and freight terminals. In short, a better rail service and a bigger rail system for both passengers and freight.

Railfuture is pro-rail but not anti-road or anti-air. However, we campaign for a switch from road and air to rail. We do not interfere in the running of the railway - we campaign for the quality and range of services provided, not how they are delivered. We are the only champion of all rail users.
