Thames Valley

By Chris Wright

Shopping village Thames Trains is planning to work with Bicester Shopping Village to share £500,000 worth of improvements to the station and access to the village. It is hoped to attract an extra 200,000 passengers to the line where patronage is currently disappointing, partly because of the low line speed.

SecurityWycombe is the latest Chiltern Line station to receive extra parking spaces and closed circuit television surveillance. Security guards are based at most stations. Car parking costs at stations have been increased.

Parking offer Winslow station goods yards are the subject of planning proposals. The developer for the western end has offered to provide 65 parking places if the station reopens.

Oxford-Bristol The introduction of an Oxford to Bristol service may be deferred until October because of track work. But under the terms of the sale of Thames Trains, the operator is now required to introduce the service.

Reopening hopes Silverlink has confirmed its continuing interest in a service from Milton Keynes to Oxford and is awaiting future work on the East-West study. It has confirmed that class 150 units are to be introduced on Bletchley-Bedford services when parent group National Express receives new stock for other services.

New station The public has responded positively to the idea of a new station at Grove/Wantage Road which would be served by the new Bristol-Oxford service. The station would cover its costs but funding of nearly £1million still has to be found.

Land use Sites at Marsh Gibbon and Newton Longueville (near Bletchley) have reportedly been acquired by Railtrack for future use.

Twin-track Upgrading was continuing on the Chiltern Line between Princes Risborough and Bicester and it was hoped the work would be finished in June.

Rail users are encouraged to join Railfuture to help us campaign for a bigger and better railway - membership for individuals is just £20 per year

Railfuture is an independent, voluntary group representing rail users in Britain with 20,000 affiliated and individual members. It is not funded by train companies, political parties or trade unions, and all members have an equal say.

Railfuture campaigns for cheap and convenient rail services for everyone; better links for buses, bikes and pedestrians; policies to get more heavy lorries on to rail; new lines, stations and freight terminals. In short, a better rail service and a bigger rail system for both passengers and freight.

Railfuture is pro-rail but not anti-road or anti-air. However, we campaign for a switch from road and air to rail. We do not interfere in the running of the railway - we campaign for the quality and range of services provided, not how they are delivered. We are the only champion of all rail users.
