North East

By Peter Wood

Listening Regional Railways North East's general manager, David Bishop, was one of the speakers at a successful series of meetings organised by the branch. We also welcomed Ernie Preston, secretary of the Rail Users' Consultative Committee and GNER's station business manager, Nigel Stacey. Nexus director general, Mike Parker, is the speaker for our annual meeting on Saturday, 21 March.

SMUG We are supporting efforts to establish a user group for rail travellers on the Durham coast line between Sunderland and Middlesbrough which could have the acronym SMUG! Current users are particularly keen to have later last trains in each direction. RRNE has also been asked to provide an earlier morning train from Yarm into Middlesbrough and later trains on all local services. The operator has promised that the summer timetable will feature a "significantly improved evening service" on the Tyne Valley line.

Reopenings Our campaign to see the Leamside line reopened continues. We have also supported the objections of Nexus, North Tyneside Council and Newcastle International Airport to a proposal to build houses on the site of the former Benton curve (south to west). It could prevent a heavy rail link from Newcastle Central to Newcastle Airport.

Rail users are encouraged to join Railfuture to help us campaign for a bigger and better railway - membership for individuals is just £20 per year

Railfuture is an independent, voluntary group representing rail users in Britain with 20,000 affiliated and individual members. It is not funded by train companies, political parties or trade unions, and all members have an equal say.

Railfuture campaigns for cheap and convenient rail services for everyone; better links for buses, bikes and pedestrians; policies to get more heavy lorries on to rail; new lines, stations and freight terminals. In short, a better rail service and a bigger rail system for both passengers and freight.

Railfuture is pro-rail but not anti-road or anti-air. However, we campaign for a switch from road and air to rail. We do not interfere in the running of the railway - we campaign for the quality and range of services provided, not how they are delivered. We are the only champion of all rail users.
