North Wales

By Dave Sallery and Rod Fairley

First principles Finished steel from Shotton is being carried by rail for the first time in many years. The steel is for a customer in the north of Scotland and is first carried by road to Leyland, Lancs! Marketing This summer's timetable for the North Wales coast will also incorporate a map and guide to the line.

Study sessions The Wrexham-Birkenhead Rail Users Association is keenly awaiting the result of three transportation studies affecting the Wrexham Bidston line. Merseytravel's Woodchurch electrification study includes a look at the development potential of the whole line. The Deeside Integrated Transport Study commissioned by Clwyd County Council, financed by the Welsh Development Agency, will look into ways of improving public transport. The Chester-Deeside Transport System Study will consider converting the Mickle Trafford to Dee Marsh railway into a busway.

Holyhead A site tentatively reserved for a piggyback terminal was sold at auction. Neither Transrail or Gwynedd County Council were given any warning by Railtrack. Opening the new ferry terminal has resulted in much of the old station complex falling into disuse.

Switch point The transportation officer of the new unitary authority, Wrexham County Borough Council, is keen to make the Wrexham Central railway site a public transport interchange.

Only fare A reduced fare initiative on the Bidston line was partly negated by a period of poor punctuality. There has however been a significant improvement of late.

Graffiti problem As soon as the cleaning gangs have left the stations are as bad again by the next day. The new booking office cum waiting shelter at Bidston gives very poor weather protection for waiting passengers. We took local authority officers and councillors on a tour of the Bidston line to show its hidden potential.

Rail users are encouraged to join Railfuture to help us campaign for a bigger and better railway - membership for individuals is just £20 per year

Railfuture is an independent, voluntary group representing rail users in Britain with 20,000 affiliated and individual members. It is not funded by train companies, political parties or trade unions, and all members have an equal say.

Railfuture campaigns for cheap and convenient rail services for everyone; better links for buses, bikes and pedestrians; policies to get more heavy lorries on to rail; new lines, stations and freight terminals. In short, a better rail service and a bigger rail system for both passengers and freight.

Railfuture is pro-rail but not anti-road or anti-air. However, we campaign for a switch from road and air to rail. We do not interfere in the running of the railway - we campaign for the quality and range of services provided, not how they are delivered. We are the only champion of all rail users.
