Local Action

London and Home Counties

By Simon Martin

Leaflet One of our first campaigns of the new year has started well. Our leaflet calling for more trains to stop at Cambridge Heath and London Fields coincided with the introduction of six new trains. These stations offer such a sensible alternative to the congested roads of the area, it can't be long before an all-day service returns.

Local groups The branch is delighted that all its local divisions are now working hard. Following a survey of all members in Guildford and North Downs the group has held two meetings with activity planned for Green Transport Week. Convener Nick McDuff can be contacted on 01483 762111.

Privatisation The branch supported the Save Our Railways Forum in Salisbury during March. We have contributed to Wessex branch's response to Stagecoach.

Thames Trains By the time you read this the branch will have commented on the Thames Trains franchise. If you would like to help us build activity in the Paddington corridor please contact me on 0181 331 9491. West London line The branch is supporting local authority plans to improve this line. North London Railways has responded to our suggestions and we hope to start work on a user group campaign soon.

RaiLondon Our journal is a huge drain on resources so the committee has been delighted with John Lovell's successful attempts to get sponsorship.

Epping-Ongar The line that refused to die! Our commiserations go in the preservation society which has lost its bid to run the line. We wish the new owners the best of luck. Whether it will draw the same crowds us the Orient Express must be doubtful

Metros While it is rumoured Croydon Tramlink is in trouble with its private finance bid, there is on the drawing board a scheme to bring the metro to Guilford.

Card sharps InterCity companies which refuse to honour travelcards must be condemned. I would be keen to hear of members' experiences.

Rail users are encouraged to join Railfuture to help us campaign for a bigger and better railway - membership for individuals is just £20 per year

Railfuture is an independent, voluntary group representing rail users in Britain with 20,000 affiliated and individual members. It is not funded by train companies, political parties or trade unions, and all members have an equal say.

Railfuture campaigns for cheap and convenient rail services for everyone; better links for buses, bikes and pedestrians; policies to get more heavy lorries on to rail; new lines, stations and freight terminals. In short, a better rail service and a bigger rail system for both passengers and freight.

Railfuture is pro-rail but not anti-road or anti-air. However, we campaign for a switch from road and air to rail. We do not interfere in the running of the railway - we campaign for the quality and range of services provided, not how they are delivered. We are the only champion of all rail users.
