Railwatch 087 - March 2001

London South East

By Richard Pout 020 8348 5064

Mayor's Strategy Future campaigning will focus on Ken Livingstone's draft transport strategy which could provide for a Railfuture in London.

ROS welcomes the inclusion of our Outer Circle network, now tagged Orbi-rail by Sir Alastair Morton! The London Metro concept is being pushed forward, another RDS promoted initiative. Services at 10 to 15 minute intervals can be delivered on most routes.

A comprehensive free 24-page summary of the Mayor's Transport. Strategy is available by phoning 0800 019 1199. The full document costs £10 but can be downloaded from the worldwide web.

Please send your responses to me, Richard Pout, 105 Crouch Hill, Hornsey, London, N8 9RD. Relate comments to the relevant sections. A special edition of Railondon will be sent to all branch members. It is available to any other member on receipt of a large SAS to Brian Baker, 203 Park Road, Kingston, Surrey KT2 5JY.

Woolwich CrossingRDS has long campaigned for and remains committed to the Woolwich Metro plan to connect Stratford in East London with the south side of the Thames to Dartford and Ebbsfleet.

Because Railtrack, Connex and the SRA are not prioritising this crossing, any crossing look like being only for the Docklands Light Railway. This may be a useful link, but does not offer the strategic benefits of the full rail crossing, now being planned further east.

Initially RDS was told that both DLR and conventional rail crossings were possible at Woolwich. One concerned local authority now tells us that the two schemes are not compatible. RDS will be supporting the local authorities which want the Strategic crossing.

Rail users are encouraged to join Railfuture to help us campaign for a bigger and better railway - membership for individuals is just £20 per year

Railfuture is an independent, voluntary group representing rail users in Britain with 20,000 affiliated and individual members. It is not funded by train companies, political parties or trade unions, and all members have an equal say.

Railfuture campaigns for cheap and convenient rail services for everyone; better links for buses, bikes and pedestrians; policies to get more heavy lorries on to rail; new lines, stations and freight terminals. In short, a better rail service and a bigger rail system for both passengers and freight.

Railfuture is pro-rail but not anti-road or anti-air. However, we campaign for a switch from road and air to rail. We do not interfere in the running of the railway - we campaign for the quality and range of services provided, not how they are delivered. We are the only champion of all rail users.
