Railwatch 081 - October 1999

East Midlands

By Anthony Kay

Hope for Ivanhoe Sir Alastair Morton, chairman of the new Strategic Rail Authority, has said that he is "sympathetic" to opening new rail routes. The comment came in response to questioning about the Ivanhoe Line (Leicester to Burton-on-Trent) from pro-rail Councillor David Bill of Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council at the Local Government Association conference. The route was originally scheduled to reopen to passengers in 1995, but Leicestershire County Council, the lead authority in the project, was unable to finance it. The council is now considering whether to make a bid for finance from the Rail Passenger Partnership Fund for reopening. Meanwhile, recent track repairs by Railtrack enabled Hertfordshire Rail Tours to run the first passenger train over the line for 10 years, on one of their Forgotten Tracks tours on 17 July. Another rare opportunity to travel on the Leicester-Burton line is to be offered by Nottinghamshire Campaign for the Protection of Rural England to highlight the lengthy delay. CPRE plans an all-day rail tour which will include the route on 24 June 2000. For information and booking: R M Eaton, Juniper House, 7 Middle Holme Lane, Sutton on Trent, Newark NG23 6PG.

Rail users are encouraged to join Railfuture to help us campaign for a bigger and better railway - membership for individuals is just £20 per year

Railfuture is an independent, voluntary group representing rail users in Britain with 20,000 affiliated and individual members. It is not funded by train companies, political parties or trade unions, and all members have an equal say.

Railfuture campaigns for cheap and convenient rail services for everyone; better links for buses, bikes and pedestrians; policies to get more heavy lorries on to rail; new lines, stations and freight terminals. In short, a better rail service and a bigger rail system for both passengers and freight.

Railfuture is pro-rail but not anti-road or anti-air. However, we campaign for a switch from road and air to rail. We do not interfere in the running of the railway - we campaign for the quality and range of services provided, not how they are delivered. We are the only champion of all rail users.
