Railwatch 077 - October 1998

Mid Wales

By Chris Magner

Disappearing trains Members of the North Cheshire Rail Users Group have been working hard to publicise the only train of the week to traverse the Frodsham Junction to Halton Junction link. This year the train is a Sprinter, unlike last year when it was a class 37 loco and coaches. Unfortunately this working has been cancelled on some Saturdays, making it even more difficult for us to make out a case for its retention. The group provides notice boards along the four routes it promotes and local authorities have been helpful and donated money. An open day was staged at Helsby station on 26 September. If you can help, contact John Hobbs, 10 Wessex Close, Woolston, Warrington, Cheshire WA1 4DD.

Rails and Ales The local passengers association has co-operated with Wales & West and local authorities to produce a brochure entitled Rails and Ales to commemorate the 140th anniversary of the Shrewsbury to Crewe line. It is available from stations and tourist offices.

Cambrian lines The Tywyn to Pwhelli section of the Cambrian lines is the only line where loco-hauled passenger and freight trains are banned. Efforts are being made to bring freight back to the Cambrian, with trains unloading on the running line when no other trains are running. Ballast trains weighing around 1,000 tons have worked between Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth in June but the viaduct at Barmouth is still awaiting repairs even though the line was closed on several weekends to allow the work to take place! The Cambrian Coast Line Action Group is worried the delays will make it harder to bring freight and excursion traffic back.

Craven Arms The new seats reported in Railwatch 76 were in memory of former BR Hereford station manager Jim Molloy and Craven Arms Rail Users Association's former chairman Neil Jones. Sadly one of the plaques has already been stolen.

Rail users are encouraged to join Railfuture to help us campaign for a bigger and better railway - membership for individuals is just £20 per year

Railfuture is an independent, voluntary group representing rail users in Britain with 20,000 affiliated and individual members. It is not funded by train companies, political parties or trade unions, and all members have an equal say.

Railfuture campaigns for cheap and convenient rail services for everyone; better links for buses, bikes and pedestrians; policies to get more heavy lorries on to rail; new lines, stations and freight terminals. In short, a better rail service and a bigger rail system for both passengers and freight.

Railfuture is pro-rail but not anti-road or anti-air. However, we campaign for a switch from road and air to rail. We do not interfere in the running of the railway - we campaign for the quality and range of services provided, not how they are delivered. We are the only champion of all rail users.
