Lincolnshire

By Brian Hastings and Paul Jowett

Advantage Stagecoach GNER has introduced new low Daypex fares from Grimsby, Scunthorpe, Hull and Sheffield to York, Durham and Newcastle as long as travellers use Stagecoach 909 buses to connect with GNER trains. The same low fares are not available to people who want to use trains run by Northern Spirit (formerly Regional Railways NE). This is unfair competition.

Trains restored The GNER coach link from Lincoln to Newark however was being replaced in September by connecting rail shuttles operated by Central Trains. Local tourist chiefs and RDS support this move.

Plea for Crowle RDS is lobbying to persuade Northern Spirit to restore Sunday trains to Crowle inspite of fears that extra stops would prejudice the overall schedules of the Scunthorp-Doncaster-Sheffield trains.

Binliner trains North Lincolnshire Council is considering a planning application to use former limestone quarries at Kirton Lindsey for London waste which would come in trainloads over the semi-mothballed Gainsborough-Barnetby line.

Station fears RDS and the South East Lincs Travellers Association are asking for reassurances that the redevelopment of Skegness station will not reduce its operating flexibility.

Could try harder RDS is calling for further action at Boston where some improvement work has already been completed. Weed control and litter clearance remain problems.

Getting the message over RDS has published local rail guides for Saxilby, Barnetby and Crowle and is preparing a leaflet for the Skegness line. The branch also has an advert in the county council's Rail Times booklet as well as a mention in the Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph's Railway Memories supplement.

More action More members are volunteering for active roles within the branch. In Sleaford the village newsletter includes a regular feature on how to access rail information. Local newspapers are also being asked to include rail information. RDS is planning to take part in the Rail 150 celebrations at Boston this month.

Congratulations Central Trains has responded to RDS suggestions to provide more publicity for through rail ticketing facilities for Chapel St Leonards and Mablethorpe. Central is also publicising local fare bargains, including the Lincolnshire Day Ranger.

Rail users are encouraged to join Railfuture to help us campaign for a bigger and better railway - membership for individuals is just £20 per year

Railfuture is an independent, voluntary group representing rail users in Britain with 20,000 affiliated and individual members. It is not funded by train companies, political parties or trade unions, and all members have an equal say.

Railfuture campaigns for cheap and convenient rail services for everyone; better links for buses, bikes and pedestrians; policies to get more heavy lorries on to rail; new lines, stations and freight terminals. In short, a better rail service and a bigger rail system for both passengers and freight.

Railfuture is pro-rail but not anti-road or anti-air. However, we campaign for a switch from road and air to rail. We do not interfere in the running of the railway - we campaign for the quality and range of services provided, not how they are delivered. We are the only champion of all rail users.
