Consultation pledge Anglia Railways Communications Manager Peter Meades was speaker at the summer meeting of the branch in Ipswich. As well as pointing to the company's achievements, he answered a wide range of questions, many about better links and more attractive fares between Cambridgeshire and the rest of the region. He promised consultation with rail users, including RDS, over the 1999 timetable.

The preserved Hastings diesel unit - a train built nearly 40 years ago to run inter-city services between London and Hastings - is currently based at Norwich and being used mainly to provide extra capacity on the routes to Yarmouth and Lowestoft. RDS members suggested this unique train be used to supplement Anglia's heavily used fleet.

Army on move During July, four military trains used the reopened line from Wymondham to Dereham, operated by our corporate member, the Mid Norfolk Railway Preservation Trust. Following a visit by the Railway Inspectorate, a number of minor jobs are being carried out prior to the reinstatement of a passenger service, planned for later this autumn.

Rail users are encouraged to join Railfuture to help us campaign for a bigger and better railway - membership for individuals is just £20 per year

Railfuture is an independent, voluntary group representing rail users in Britain with 20,000 affiliated and individual members. It is not funded by train companies, political parties or trade unions, and all members have an equal say.

Railfuture campaigns for cheap and convenient rail services for everyone; better links for buses, bikes and pedestrians; policies to get more heavy lorries on to rail; new lines, stations and freight terminals. In short, a better rail service and a bigger rail system for both passengers and freight.

Railfuture is pro-rail but not anti-road or anti-air. However, we campaign for a switch from road and air to rail. We do not interfere in the running of the railway - we campaign for the quality and range of services provided, not how they are delivered. We are the only champion of all rail users.
