Lincolnshire

By Brian Hastings and Paul Jowett

150 celebrations RDS member Antony Beveridge has been contacting councils, voluntary groups and Regional Railways North East to ensure the Barton on Humber line 150 anniversary is celebrated next year.

Freight revival Railtrack has reconnected the siding in the New Holland bulk terminal. There are also hopes of gaining domestic refuse traffic from London to infill former limestone quarries at Kirton on the Gainsborough-Barnetby route. The branch plans to draw attention to the need to preserve property assets for freight depots and sidings.

Green signal Signalling in the Lincoln and Sleaford area is to be upgraded. Twelve manual signalboxes will be made redundant. Railtrack, however, has denied rumours of reducing double track to single.

Special plea Crowle town council, where RDS member Ann Hindley is a councillor, has asked for reliability improvements on the Scunthorpe-Doncaster stopping service. The council also wants other trains to make special stops if there are long delays, and a better Sunday service.

New trains Central Trains are buying new class 170 trains. An InterCity 125 used over the Christmas period on the Nottingham-Lincoln route proved very popular. The new 170s will replace single-car 153 trains, said Lincoln station manager Andy Garner. But over Christmas at least 15 train services were replaced by buses with a similar occurrence over the new year period. A service and repair depot is to be built at Nottingham to avoid trains having to travel to Tyseley, Birmingham. Central also plans to address overcrowding by lengthening morning trains from Nottingham to Skegness and afternoon returns. Cheap day returns will be available on earlier trains during the summer. The branch is planning to publish a leaflet promoting the line.

Flexible The Grantham, Retford and Newark Commuters' Association persuaded GNER to be more flexible about penalising travellers unable to buy a ticket because of long queues at booking offices.

Rail users are encouraged to join Railfuture to help us campaign for a bigger and better railway - membership for individuals is just £20 per year

Railfuture is an independent, voluntary group representing rail users in Britain with 20,000 affiliated and individual members. It is not funded by train companies, political parties or trade unions, and all members have an equal say.

Railfuture campaigns for cheap and convenient rail services for everyone; better links for buses, bikes and pedestrians; policies to get more heavy lorries on to rail; new lines, stations and freight terminals. In short, a better rail service and a bigger rail system for both passengers and freight.

Railfuture is pro-rail but not anti-road or anti-air. However, we campaign for a switch from road and air to rail. We do not interfere in the running of the railway - we campaign for the quality and range of services provided, not how they are delivered. We are the only champion of all rail users.
