East Anglia

By Trevor Garrod

RDS was closely involved in the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the Reedham-Lowestoft line in late April and early May. This included publishing a book, England's Most Easterly Railway, describing the line and its history and looking at the issues which have faced this and other secondary lines in recent years. The 60-page illustrated book is available at £3.95 plus 50p postage from Trevor Garrod, 15 Clapham Road, Lowestoft, NR32 1RQ.

As with 150th anniversary celebrations for other lines, there were lectures on railway history, an exhibition and a Rail Day. The organisers also aimed to promote the present-day railway through, for example, a month-long exhibition in Lowestoft's East Point Pavilion. Competitions were orga-nised with rail tickets as prizes and Anglia Railways offered a special cheap fare for the May Bank Holiday weekend. At Lowestoft and Oulton Broad North stations, local information boards, cycle stands and new seats were presented.

Rail users are encouraged to join Railfuture to help us campaign for a bigger and better railway - membership for individuals is just £20 per year

Railfuture is an independent, voluntary group representing rail users in Britain with 20,000 affiliated and individual members. It is not funded by train companies, political parties or trade unions, and all members have an equal say.

Railfuture campaigns for cheap and convenient rail services for everyone; better links for buses, bikes and pedestrians; policies to get more heavy lorries on to rail; new lines, stations and freight terminals. In short, a better rail service and a bigger rail system for both passengers and freight.

Railfuture is pro-rail but not anti-road or anti-air. However, we campaign for a switch from road and air to rail. We do not interfere in the running of the railway - we campaign for the quality and range of services provided, not how they are delivered. We are the only champion of all rail users.
