SubscribeHoliday blues Central Trains have failed to respond to appeals to provide a proper train service to Skegness and other East Coast resorts for the period which covers the late May Bank Holiday and the schools' half-term holiday in 1997. For the second year, the operator plans to provide only a winter service. Last year, extra demand was accommodated by doubling the length of trains which meant that they were too long to stop at some of the village stations. Central Trains ran buses to serve the omitted stations! This is not good enough.
Pulling power There was tremendous interest in the RDS stall organised by new branch secretary Charles Niven at the Lincoln 150 rail celebrations in August.
Way Forward Central Trains is considering a direct Lincoln-London service using 158 units running via Sleaford and Spalding.
Coal portWe have insisted that, if a new coal mine is developed on the boundary with Nottinghamshire as proposed, coal and spoil should be transported by rail only, even if rail lines have to be reopened to deal with the traffic.

Railfuture is an independent, voluntary group representing rail users in Britain with 20,000 affiliated and individual members. It is not funded by train companies, political parties or trade unions, and all members have an equal say.
Railfuture campaigns for cheap and convenient rail services for everyone; better links for buses, bikes and pedestrians; policies to get more heavy lorries on to rail; new lines, stations and freight terminals. In short, a better rail service and a bigger rail system for both passengers and freight.
Railfuture is pro-rail but not anti-road or anti-air. However, we campaign for a switch from road and air to rail. We do not interfere in the running of the railway - we campaign for the quality and range of services provided, not how they are delivered. We are the only champion of all rail users.
