Railwatch 069 - October 1996

North Wales

By Chris Magner

Junction fight The North Cheshire Rail Users Group is continuing its fight to save the Frodsham Junction to Halton Junction Runcorn spur line which forms part of a through route from Llandudno to Liverpool. NCRUG wishes to see an express Liverpool-North Wales service via the spur line. At the moment only one train per week uses the line, the 20.05(SO) Chester to Runcorn main line. This is formed by a class 37 loco and five coaches, a big improvement on the class 150 sprinter used in 1995 but unfortunately this service is not properly advertised. On June 22 there were two passengers on the train. This increased to 8 on July 13 when 37429 Eisteddfod Genedlaethol pulled five coaches on the 20.05. John Hobbs, 10 Wessex Close, Woolston, Warrington, Cheshire would like to hear from any RDS member interested in the NCRUG campaign. NCRUG would like to see a return service provided between Runcorn, Frodsham and Helsby. An hourly diesel unit used to run between Liverpool Lime Street and Chester.

Rail users are encouraged to join Railfuture to help us campaign for a bigger and better railway - membership for individuals is just £20 per year

Railfuture is an independent, voluntary group representing rail users in Britain with 20,000 affiliated and individual members. It is not funded by train companies, political parties or trade unions, and all members have an equal say.

Railfuture campaigns for cheap and convenient rail services for everyone; better links for buses, bikes and pedestrians; policies to get more heavy lorries on to rail; new lines, stations and freight terminals. In short, a better rail service and a bigger rail system for both passengers and freight.

Railfuture is pro-rail but not anti-road or anti-air. However, we campaign for a switch from road and air to rail. We do not interfere in the running of the railway - we campaign for the quality and range of services provided, not how they are delivered. We are the only champion of all rail users.
