Midlands

By Alan Bevan

Euro links Two major rail freight depots are being built for Channel Tunnel traffic in the Midlands even without the Central Railway scheme. Hams Hall, near Whitacre junction, on the Water Orton line is going ahead while the DIRFT site, near Rugby, will open in the spring with five 750 metre-long sidings beside the Northampton loop on the West Coast main line.

Turbo start We welcome the successful M40 management buy-out of ChilternTrains. We believe they are positive and go-ahead. The hourly London Marylebone to Birmingham Snow Hill trains are to be enhanced with four three-car super Turbos to provide 100mph air-conditioned services from September 1998.

Metro progressThe Midland Metro line one from Birmingham Snow Hill to Wolverhampton via West Bromwich will be operational in February 1998. Centro is revising its Metro construction programme into achievable £80 million "bite-sized" extensions. Wednesbury-Dudley on the disused freight line and a street-running Snow Hill-Moor Street-Bull Ring route are leading contenders.

Improvements Rugeley station is planned for reopening in May 1997 to allow Hednesford services to be extended. Centro is planning to provide a half-hourly service between Walsall and Wolverhampton from October next year, using class 310 electric units. A new convention centre costing £5 million is expected to open in May 1998.

Rail users are encouraged to join Railfuture to help us campaign for a bigger and better railway - membership for individuals is just £20 per year

Railfuture is an independent, voluntary group representing rail users in Britain with 20,000 affiliated and individual members. It is not funded by train companies, political parties or trade unions, and all members have an equal say.

Railfuture campaigns for cheap and convenient rail services for everyone; better links for buses, bikes and pedestrians; policies to get more heavy lorries on to rail; new lines, stations and freight terminals. In short, a better rail service and a bigger rail system for both passengers and freight.

Railfuture is pro-rail but not anti-road or anti-air. However, we campaign for a switch from road and air to rail. We do not interfere in the running of the railway - we campaign for the quality and range of services provided, not how they are delivered. We are the only champion of all rail users.
