Railwatch 068 - July 1996

Thames Valley

By Chris Wright

Opportunity The potential of rail for easing road congestion was highlighted by Peter Headicar of Oxford Brookes University when he spoke to our annual meeting.

Shadow Labour rail spokesman Brian Wilson will visit Milton Keynes to meet RDS and the Oxon and Bucks Rail Action Committee to discuss East-West rail links.

Minister Rail Minister John Watts is to address the branch on Saturday 8 June at the Greyfriars Centre in Reading at 1400. All RDS members are welcome. Contact Martin Smith on 01235 520306 for more details.

Sweet news Mars bars might soon be travelling by train. The international company has installed a warehouse at Bicester which will eventually include a rail siding.

Buyout bid John Laing and 3i are supporting the Chiltern Lines management and employee buyout led by Adrian Shooter. The consortium is called M40 Trains.

Half-hearted Only six of the 12 trains between Bicester and Oxford are protected by the draft PSR for Thames Trains.

Road groupies Buckinghamshire County Council takes a negative attitude towards railways and says it can do little to improve services. By contrast, other county councils are making tremendous efforts - and succeeding - in improving the train service. Wake up Bucks. It is your responsibility to look after public transport users, not just keep wasting money on road building.

Positive Oxfordshire is keen to reopen a station at Grove (near Wantage) to be served by a new Swindon-Oxford service. Railtrack is demanding cash up front for a pathing study.

Keep it dark New stations in the Reading area at Smallmead, Burghfield and Graveley are suggested after a study by Babtie. A tunnel half a mile east of Reading may also be reopened so trains from Swindon and Oxford can easily cross over to the Gatwick line. Unfortunately "commercial confidentiality" is being used as an excuse to deny the inquiry team proper information. The fruits of privatisation!

Rail users are encouraged to join Railfuture to help us campaign for a bigger and better railway - membership for individuals is just £20 per year

Railfuture is an independent, voluntary group representing rail users in Britain with 20,000 affiliated and individual members. It is not funded by train companies, political parties or trade unions, and all members have an equal say.

Railfuture campaigns for cheap and convenient rail services for everyone; better links for buses, bikes and pedestrians; policies to get more heavy lorries on to rail; new lines, stations and freight terminals. In short, a better rail service and a bigger rail system for both passengers and freight.

Railfuture is pro-rail but not anti-road or anti-air. However, we campaign for a switch from road and air to rail. We do not interfere in the running of the railway - we campaign for the quality and range of services provided, not how they are delivered. We are the only champion of all rail users.
