Railwatch - Sales Stand

BY RAIL TO TRIER

RDS Group Travel is organising a visit by Eurostar and inter-city train via Brussels and Luxembourg through the scenic Ardennes to Trier from 14 to 18 April 1999.

Nestling among the vine-clad slopes of the Moselle Valley, Trier is the oldest town in Germany. Day trips are possible to Luxembourg, Metz and Cologne, and a visit is also planned to Saarbrucken with its new light rail system. It is also hoped to meet local pro-rail campaigners. The cost, including four nights B&B plus insurance, will be a maximum of £300. Full details and booking form will be posted out immediately after Christmas. Send SAE to Peter Cannon, 16 Southfield Drive, Leiston, Suffolk, IP16 4DP (Fax: 01728 603199) In spring 2000 we hope to organise a trip to Berlin.

On Yer Bike

This attractive book produced by the Evening Star includes details of 12 cycle rides in Suffolk and also good maps and information about how to use trains to get to and from some of the rides. It's an excellent example of how integrated transport can be promoted. The book is sponsored by Suffolk County Council and train operator Anglia has taken some steps to be more welcoming to cyclists. But much more action is needed.

Some of the trains operating in Suffolk and Norfolk can only take a maximum of four bikes — even after they have been modified. So the family shown on the cover would have been barred. On Anglia's InterCity routes, a charge of £3 per cycle per single journey is made. So this family would have had to pay £30 for their bikes for a day out even before paying for their own tickets. Not surprisingly you see a lot of cars in East Anglia with bike racks.

The book is available for £3.25 including post and packing from The Evening Star, 30 Lower Brook Street, Ipswich IP4 1AN

Rail users are encouraged to join Railfuture to help us campaign for a bigger and better railway - membership for individuals is just £20 per year

Railfuture is an independent, voluntary group representing rail users in Britain with 20,000 affiliated and individual members. It is not funded by train companies, political parties or trade unions, and all members have an equal say.

Railfuture campaigns for cheap and convenient rail services for everyone; better links for buses, bikes and pedestrians; policies to get more heavy lorries on to rail; new lines, stations and freight terminals. In short, a better rail service and a bigger rail system for both passengers and freight.

Railfuture is pro-rail but not anti-road or anti-air. However, we campaign for a switch from road and air to rail. We do not interfere in the running of the railway - we campaign for the quality and range of services provided, not how they are delivered. We are the only champion of all rail users.
